Interior design fundamentals

Creating a home that feels spacious, functional, and harmonious is an art in itself which most people find challenging – and that's why they hire an Interior Designer.

Effective spatial planning is all about making the most of the available space while ensuring that each area serves a purpose and feels inviting. Whether you have a small flat or a larger home, here are some essential tips to help you master the art of spatial planning to transform your home into a beautifully organised, functional space.

Define the Purpose of Each Room

Before arranging furniture or selecting hour style and decor, take a moment to consider each room's purpose. Do you need a dedicated workspace, or will a multi-functional living area serve your lifestyle better? Define each area’s role to ensure that everything you bring into the room aligns with its function. For example, a living room that doubles as a home office might require different seating arrangements and storage solutions than a solely social space.

Maximize Natural Light

Natural light can dramatically affect the perceived size and comfort of a room. Position your furniture to make the most of windows and natural light sources. Avoid blocking windows with large furniture, and consider using lighter, reflective colours for walls and decor in rooms with less light. Mirrors are also excellent for reflecting light and giving rooms a more open, airy feel. They don’t always have to be head height either! I have often placed mirrors higher up to reflect light coming in from an angle that will light the room naturally! Placing mirrors on staircases is another way of reflecting light bringing a beam of light to a dull dark space.

Choose Furniture Wisely

The size, shape, and style of furniture can either enhance a room's flow or make it feel cluttered. This is how designers assist with spacial planning and how to help select the right size furniture choices:

  • Scale and Proportion: Avoid oversized furniture in small spaces. Instead, opt for pieces that fit the room's scale.
  • Multipurpose Pieces: Select versatile furniture, like ottomans with storage, extendable dining tables, or foldable desks. These can adapt to different needs and maximize your space.
  • Open Furniture: Items with open frames, like glass tables or raised sofas, create a sense of flow and space.

Embrace Zones in Open-Plan Spaces

In open plan living areas, creating designated "zones" can add structure and functionality. Use rugs, lighting, or furniture arrangements to define separate areas, such as a cozy seating nook, dining area, or workspace. This approach gives purpose to each part of the room, creating a sense of order and functionality.

Create Flow with Pathways

A well-planned pathway through a room is essential for comfort and functionality. Ensure that there’s enough space to walk around furniture and that pathways are clear and unobstructed. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 18-24 inches between furniture pieces to create a comfortable walkway. Position major furniture, like sofas and beds, with pathways in mind, allowing easy access to exits, entrances, and focal points.

Use Vertical Space for Storage

When floor space is limited, think vertically. Tall bookshelves, wall-mounted cabinets, and floating shelves provide valuable storage without occupying precious square footage. In smaller rooms, extending storage upwards draws the eye, making the room feel taller and much more spacious.

Declutter for a Sense of Openness

Clutter can quickly make a room feel cramped. Keep surfaces clear by organizing belongings in designated storage solutions, like baskets, bins, and cabinets. Embrace the "less is more" mindset by prioritizing only essential or meaningful items. Open space isn’t empty—it’s intentional and calming.

Choose a Cohesive Colour Scheme

Colour impacts the perception of space. Light, neutral shades can make rooms feel larger and brighter, while darker shades add coziness. For smaller spaces, consider a light, monochromatic colour scheme, or use contrasting colours for focal points to create depth. A cohesive palette helps visually tie different spaces together, especially in open-concept layouts.

Add Mirrors Strategically

Mirrors are a designer’s best friend when it comes to enhancing space. They reflect light, give depth, and create the illusion of a larger room. Place a mirror opposite a window to amplify natural light or behind furniture to add dimension and make the room feel more open. Don’t always place them at eye height, place them where they would best reflect the most amount of light.

Don’t Overlook the Power of Lighting

Layered lighting is essential for setting the right mood and function in each space. Use ambient lighting (overhead lights), task lighting (desk lamps, reading lights), and accent lighting (floor lamps, wall sconces) to achieve a well-lit and balanced room. In small spaces, use recessed lighting or wall-mounted fixtures to free up floor and table space.

Keep Flexibility in Mind

As life changes, so do your needs at home. Choose flexible designs and furniture that can adapt. Modular furniture, movable shelving, and versatile storage options allow you to reconfigure spaces as needed. A home office might become a playroom, or a guest room could double as a gym. The ability to adapt and rearrange furniture makes it easy to adjust your home to fit your evolving lifestyle.

Add Personal Touches Carefully

Effective spatial planning balances functionality with personality. Add character to each room with a few well-chosen decorative items, like artwork, rugs, or throw pillows. Choose pieces that add texture, colour, and style without overwhelming the space. This careful curation ensures that your home feels personal and inviting without compromising on openness and flow.

The art of spatial planning is about making your homework for you—balancing beauty and practicality, function and flow. By following these tips, you can create a home that’s not only visually appealing but also comfortable and functional.
