Let there be light!
Whether it’s natural or artificial, lighting is crucial to any successful interior design project, yet it can be one thing that often gets overlooked.
This was the case with a recent project, where our client had commissioned a fantastic extension, but no consideration had been given to the lighting design. To illustrate the issue, we asked the client to take a few photographs at night to demonstrate exactly where the lighting was most lacking. The extension featured stunning vaulted ceilings and apex roofs, so when we reviewed the photographs we decided to install directional lighting on tracks.
Lighting tracks can be a bit cumbersome and unattractive so we sourced a version that had a white track which would blend with the ceiling cover and effectively become invisible. We also incorporated the wood within the actual directional light and pointed the lights towards the dark areas of the extension and to highlight the art work that was mounted on the walls.

For Leigh Hall, owner of Strive for Design, creating effective lighting designs requires creativity and foresight. ‘Increasingly our clients are turning to us for advice on lighting, especially in terms of the style, colour or era that would best fit with the design of the room that they’re opting for. We have access to dozens of lighting suppliers so we know that we can always find a suitable solution for any space. The other thing to remember is that beautiful lighting doesn’t have to break the bank as there are lots of high-quality but cost-effective products on the market – it’s just having the know-how to understand where to find them.’
